CONFIDENTIALITY

Psychotherapy & Confidentiality

Jason Phelps is a Montreal psychotherapist that believes strongly in protecting his psychotherapy client's confidentiality.

Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but the therapist's office. The best therapists always have a strong moral commitment to protecting their counselling client's anonymity.

If privacy is important to you, you should know that not all psychotherapists in Quebec are legally obliged to protect your confidentiality. Only a licensed professional, such as a social worker, psychologist, psychiatrist, or nurse is bound by law to protect your confidentiality in their psychotherapy practices.

There are a few exceptions to psychotherapist confidentiality:

  • Minors under 14 require parental consent
  • Imminent and preventable threats of serious harm to self or others (homocide/suicide)
  • Imminent and preventable abuse of a child
  • Ordered by a judge as part of a criminal proceeding
